EXCURSIONS AVAILABLE FROM SUNBIRD MZUZU

The city of Mzuzu was established during the colonial era as a base for developing the plantation agriculture in the north of the country. Tung, tea and coffee plantations were developed in the hinterland of the settlement, which to this day retains its small town charm. A walk along the Jacaranda-lined streets of Mzuzu from the hotel leads you past the brick homes that were built for the administrators who established the town. Mzuzu is now a bustling town that is the focal point of economic growth in the Northern Region.

The small port of Nkhata Bay on the Lake Malawi is just one hour’s drive down the escarpment from Mzuzu. Much of the fish comsumed in the Northern Region is landed here and makes its way to the fish market in Mzuzu by mid morning. Half an hour drive further south along the lake takes you to the beautiful white sand beaches of Chintheche and Bandawe Mission, a historic monument and the site of the second Livingstonia Mission.

The pinnacle, quite literally, of the missionaries’ achievements, is the present Mission at Khondowe. It is perched on the northeastern corner of the Nyika National Park, and is reached by a precipitous mountain road that offers breathtaking views of Lake Malawi below as you negotiate the hairpin bends. Here the missionaries found the cool Malaria-free environment that they had sought in a location physically similar to the highlands of their native Scotland.

The Nyika National Park is a highland paradise within 6 hours drive of Mzuzu. Malawi’s largest national park, Nyika, is a place of great natural beauty. Its panoramic vistas and wooded valleys are home to a tremendous variety of plant life. The Nyika Plateau is home to populations of game, including elephant, buffalo, lion, the elusive leopard, cheetah, various antelope,  Burchell’s zebra and many more. Nyika also supports the greatest diversity of birds found anywhere in Malawi. Many of the plant, animal, bird, butterfly, and one each of chameleon, frog and toad species are endemic to Nyika and the Plateau and are found either nowhere else in Malawi, or nowhere else at all!

Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is a 3 hour drive northeast between Mzuzu and Nyika. The Reserve is home to large populations of elephant, buffalo and  hippo, a variety of antelope, lion and leopard and the endangered African wild dog, whilst offering some good birdwatching.
