At the centre of the centre. Enjoy capital attention at Malawi’s leading hotel.

Malawi, the warm heart of Africa, lends itself beautifully to rest and relaxation with a pace of life un hurried as in ages past – amid a people renowned for their friendliness. Major national hotel chain Sunbird Hotels, which manages 7 stylish properties throughout Malawi, offers widely different but complementary experiences at unique “leisure and pleasure” hotels in Malawi.

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi, chosen because of its position in the very heart of the country. The city has two contrasting faces: the bustling Old Town, and the landscaped New City Centre and suburbs that house the offices and homes of civil servants and Government employees, the large diplomatic community and the many parastatals based there.

Sunbird Capital is very much geared towards the business community, and conveniently located on Capital Hill within easy walking distance of the centre, shopping malls and numerous restaurants.

A total of 168 rooms include 69 Superior, 79 Deluxe, 5 Junior suites, 5 Studios, 5 Suites, 1 Deluxe suite and 4 Presidential suites. All rooms are en suite, air conditioned, with satellite television, international direct dialing, e-mail and WiFi facilities.

The Mimosa Restaurant is an open brasserie-style restaurant spilling out onto a picturesque courtyard with a large ornamental fishpond. Along with buffet breakfast and lunch, an a la carte menu is served throughout the day. Tidye Restaurant offers an a la carte menu and contemporary African cuisine. It is also ideal for business lunches. The Cocktail bar is a formal bar offering expertly mixed cocktails, while the public bar has a more casual atmosphere with satellite television and fast local snacks.

Services available include 24 hour room service, in-room safe and minibar, laundry service, swimming pool, gym, squash courts, hair salon, baby sitter (by prior arrangement), free car parking, car hire and taxi rank, Business centre, WiFi, Travel agent and airline offices.

5 Conference rooms can accommodate a total capacity of 400 delegates. Catering for all types of conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops and product launches. Equipment is available.

A well-equipped gymnasium and squash courts are available by the pool. Golf and tennis are available to hotel residents at the Lilongwe Golf Club. And for those who believe in luck, there is an international casino off Chilambula Rd.

In Old Town Mall are the two best galleries in Lilongwe: Central Africana, which sells a fabulous selection of new and antiquarian books, including some very valuable Africana; and La Galleria which exhibits paintings, sculpture and textiles by the top Malawian artists.

With time to spare, the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre lies between the New and Old towns and sports a wide variety of wildlife to over 200 species of bird. Guided tours can be arranged.

For the busy executive there are numerous places to relax and unwind close to Lilongwe. An hour south of Lilongwe, on the M1, is Dedza Mountain. In Dedza itself the famed Dedza Pottery exports its wares worldwide. There are unimpeded views from the mountains here across Lake Malawi to the east, and far into Mozambique to the west. The pleasant climate and reliable rainfall means the area is the source of much of Lilongwe’s fruit and vegetables.

Kuti Game Ranch, just outside Salima, is also an hour drive from Sunbird Capital. It covers 3000 ha and is a haven for wildlife, from big mammals to the hundreds of species of birds. Minutes from here you can visit Africa’s third largest lake to sample the fresh waters of Lake Malawi at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach.
