Opposite Bird Island on the Salima shores of Lake Malawi lies Sunbird Livingstonia Beach a premier beachside resort and one of the very best places to enjoy the splendors of this beautiful country. The hotel, set in beautiful tropical gardens is a 2 hour drive from Lilongwe International Airport on an excellent scenic road swooping down the southernmost  shoulders of the Great Rift Valley.

A shuttle service is available on prior request.  The exclusive resort stands right on the 1 kilometer long, broad private sands once known as Grand Beach, and next to the  beach is the hotel’s beautiful campsite.

 

ACCOMMODATION

 

45 rooms include 22 Standard, 6 Deluxe, 13 Superior, including Chalets(each with double bed and private beach), 3 Family(2 separate bedrooms, 4 beds) and 1 Superior with direct lake view.
All rooms are en suite, air-conditioned, have satellite TV, coffee-making and phone facilities.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS

An open-air terrace restaurant and the second storey dining room both overlook the beautifully tended gardens and the beach. A range of local and international dishes are available with fresh lake fish being a speciality. A barbecue is often used. The Kasupe Bar offers relaxed drinks around the swimming pool.

 

SERVICES

Services include room safes and service (06.00 to 22.00), laundry, baby sitter on request, hotel shop, WiFi, Business centre and free car parking.

 

CONFERENCE FACILITIES

1 Conference room with a maximum capacity of 30 delegates. Equipment is available.

 
SPORTS, ON AND OFF THE BEACH

This historic beach was a landing place for the dhows in the days of slavery. Also the birthplace of lakeshore tourism in Malawi. Initially known as Grand Beach, a fine description of its width and length, framed and sheltered by rocky coves at either end. Nowadays it is a haven for wind surfing, water-skiing, boat rides, canoeing and island trips, snorkeling, beach volleyball, netball, football, swimming and water polo. Darts, lawn and table tennis are also available. Contestants in the annual Lake Malawi Marathon often overnight at this hotel.

MUA MISSION – TOUR (FULL DAY)

Leave the hotel and visit the country’s top cultural museum at Mua. The Chamare Museum boasts a wealth of Malawian culture and history in the form of an exhibition of traditional arts, crafts, weapons, implements and ornaments. There is nothing like it in Malawi. Our tours include a picnic lunch prepared by Sunbirds finest chefs.

 

CURIO AND FISH FARM TOUR (2 HOURS)

Accompanied by a guide buy some of the most interesting curios on the continent. From key holders to man sized sculptures, with serious bargaining encouraged! From the handicraft stalls, move on to Malawi’s unique tropical fish farm. Stuart Grant’s farm processes and exports fish worldwide. It is renowned for it’s export of the many different species of Malawi’s endemic and colourful cichlids, the envy of aquarists worldwide.

 

FRESH WATER SNORKELING (4 HOURS)

At the beautiful and remote Maleri Islands, a 45 minute boat ride away, the snorkeling is unique for the water around the twin islands is crystal clear. You can even touch the beautiful little fish if you are lucky enough. Depending on the time of your departure, you can opt to have a picnic lunch provided by the hotel on the islands.

 

FISHING VILLAGE TOUR AND VIEW POINT (4 HOURS)

Start off this walking tour in the early morning, accompanied by our guide. Visit one of the fish drying and net preparation beach areas – set up in a typical Malawian style. Talk to fishermen and see for yourself an age-old, traditional lifestyle. After the tour, climb to enjoy a singular viewpoint. High above the lake, it provides stunning views and photographic opportunities of the whole Senga Bay area and beyond.

 

KUTI COMMUNITY GAME RANCH (HALF AND FULL DAY)

Northwest of Salima, and about 35 km from the hotel, is Malawi’s first wildlife breeding station, Kuti Community Game Ranch. Well stocked with nyala,  wildebeest, zebra, kudu and ostrich. It is one of the few places in Malawi where giraffe may be seen. Birdwatching is excellent with a wide selection of indigenous species including large numbers of waterfowl on the vast natural dam. Picnics are available from the hotel for full day tours.

 

CROCODILE FARM  (HALF DAY)

The crocodile farm located 10 kilometers from Sunbird Livingstonia Beach is another place of interest. Here guests have a rare opportunity to come up close with one of Africa’s most fierce animals. The farm has over 500 crocodiles with the oldest  being  40 years old.
