EXCUSIONS AVAILABLE FROM SUNBIRD KU CHAWE

ZOMBA PLATEAU SAFARI

This tour can be taken either by 8-seat jeep (3 hours), mountain bike (4 hours) or on foot (full day)

Pass first through the trout farm, Williams and other scenic waterfalls. On the way see wild orchids (December to March), lilies, proteas, aloes, gladioli and the prehistoric cycads and riverside tree ferns. The views at Queens’s and Emperor’s View points are stunning on a clear day – all the way to Mozambique.  The rolling open grassland of the north contrasts sharply with the western Chingale Valley. Enjoy tea, coffee and cake at Emperor’s View.

The tour ends at Chingwe’s Hole, a mysterious cavern falling vertically by the edge of the plateau and surrounded by legend and superstition.

WALKING TRAILS

Zomba Plateau is perfect for exploration on foot. Experienced guides escort our walking safaris and offer fine leisure opportunities to our visitors.

POTATO TRAILS (1 HOUR)

Leading down to Zomba town is the path used by villagers from the other side of the plateau when taking their potatoes to market in Zomba. Along the way, admire a huge variety of ground and epiphytic orchids (December to March, especially on seepage racks), many of the satyrium, habenaria, disa and cynorkis families, butterflies and birds. A transfer up the mountain is easily arranged for a welcome tea back at the hotel.

NAWIMBE PEAK (1 HOUR)

A 45 minute walk from the hotel provides some of the best panoramas from Zomba Mountain. Photographers have the best views not only of Zomba but also of the Mulanje Massif and the Phalombe Plains.

ZOMBA TOUR (2 HOURS)

The first stop is the Memorial to the fallen of the Malawi battalions in the famed King’s African Rifles. Then on, between magnificent roadside lining African Mahogany trees (Mbawa) and past many historical colonial buildings, to the very colourful Zomba market. From there to the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College campus, then to the beautiful, well-tendered Botanical Gardens, the oldest and largest botanical garden in the country, boasting both indigenous and exotic plants. A few metres away are the old Parliament buildings and the National Archives.

LIWONDE NATIONAL PARK SAFARI (FULL DAY – DRY SEASON)

This park runs along the Shire River, the only river to drain enormous Lake Malawi. In the dry season when elephant, hippo, crocodile and many antelope such as sable, waterbuck and impala stay close to the only water supply, riverside game viewing – from the safety of specially built river cruisers – is a never-to-be forgotten experience. More than 400 species of birds have been spotted along these riverbanks. The tour includes a picnic lunch.
